Who said a career in banking has to be tied to one place? Our Customer Advisor, Harry Heath, is constantly on the move. Whether he’s filling in for sick leave or covering holidays, Harry steps up to keep our branches running smoothly. We caught up with him on his way to our West Lakes branch to chat about what he enjoys most about his role, his commitment to fitness and how he embraces the adventure.

A banker on the move

Harry isn't your typical banker. Instead of a permanent office, he thrives on variety and prefers the open road (well, the South Australian highway, to be exact). As our relief Customer Advisor at Bendigo Bank, Harry acts as a vital support system for our branches across Adelaide.

As well as the wide range of customer service tasks typically handled by a teller, Harry’s dynamic role enables him to experience the best of both worlds: the satisfaction of customer interaction and a constant change of scenery.

“This week, for example, I’m working at three different branches,” says Harry. “If it wasn’t for this role, I would’ve never left the suburbs I’m surrounded by. Now, I’m involved in every little pocket of Adelaide. I love getting to know my city a bit more and making connections across different parts of the state.”

After Harry graduated from university with a degree in finance, he initially sought a traditional bank path. But a chance encounter with the relief team revealed an unconventional career path that suited his personality.

“There are plenty of jobs where you can work from home, but I just don’t think that’s for me,” says Harry. “What I found was that I actually preferred going between branches. It keeps the job fresh! Plus, I’m very much an extroverted person, so it suits me really well.”

Want to grow your career without sacrificing what's important to you?

It Begins at Bendigo Bank.

State-wide connections

For Harry, every week brings a new branch, a new set of colleagues and a new batch of customers to meet. He embraces this challenge, finding joy in helping everyone from young entrepreneurs to seasoned retirees. He particularly appreciates Bendigo Bank’s empathetic approach.

“The way Bendigo Bank sets itself apart from its competitors is through customer service,” says Harry. “Not just in the way we smile and greet our customers, but how we go above and beyond. Whether that’s helping someone navigate online banking for the first time or the care we take with our vulnerable customers.”

Despite the constant movement required for his role, Harry feels a strong sense of connectedness and belonging at Bendigo Bank. Weekly video calls between branches showcase the supportive network of managers sharing best practices and encouragement. This sense of camaraderie extends to every branch Harry visits, where he’s consistently met with open arms.

“People often ask me, ‘Harry, what’s your favourite branch?’ But I actually can’t pick one. There’s a great sense of camaraderie here, and I’m feeling it more and more the longer I work at the bank.”

We’re making better, bigger. And we’ll get there with you.

Find your career opportunity at Bendigo Bank.

Opportunity meets community

When Harry isn’t helping customers or forging connections with colleagues, you’ll likely find him at the gym, attending a fitness class or exploring the outdoors. This dedication to health and wellness fuels his enthusiasm and allows him to bring positive energy to his role at Bendigo Bank.

“I’m a bit of a health nut,” Harry admits. “I always tell people, any time I’m not working, you can expect me to be burning calories!”

Harry’s story is a testament to the unique opportunities a career at Bendigo Bank can offer. It’s a work environment grounded in a strong sense of community where diverse personalities are enabled to thrive.

For those considering a career in banking, Harry offers the following valuable advice:

“Always ask questions and be inquisitive. There are many people who can help you along the way. Also, practice empathy. In this line of work, people may come to you with extremely unfortunate situations. It helps to put yourself in their shoes or imagine how you would feel in that situation. It’s about understanding where they’re coming from so you can best help them.”
