We all belong to many different communities.
And we’d like them to be around for many years to come.

We're doing our bit for a more sustainable future. While there's always more to do, we're not standing still. Our people are proud of what we've achieved so far and we hope that you will be too, knowing that your career with us is making a positive impact today and in the future.

  • We're committed to reducing absolute emissions (including financed emissions) 50% from baseline by 2030
  • We’re on track to purchase 100% renewable energy by the end of 2025
  • We do not and will not provide finance directly to fossil fuel projects or large-scale electricity generation [1]
  • We provide training, support and incentives to our people to help reduce their climate footprint

Ensuring a sustainable future

As an organisation, we have an obligation to the environment and Australia's communities. But it’s more than that.

As a member of the Bendigo Bank team, you can feel proud to work for an organisation that walks the talk and genuinely cares about reducing our impact on the environment and increasing our social impact in communities. Here’s how you’ll see it lived here:

  • We consider and improve the environmental and social outcomes of the business decisions we make
  • We disclose our carbon emissions
  • We're constantly developing and participating in initiatives that reduce our impact on the climate and wider environment, and educating and encouraging others to do the same
  • We support long-term strategies that aim to reduce our carbon and environmental footprint
  • We’re working to better understand the dependencies we have on the natural environment, and improving the systems we’re part of
  • We support communities right across Australia through our Community Enterprise Foundation grants, scholarships, and community and disaster appeals.
  • We proudly support digital inclusion through our partnership with Good Things Foundation
  • We’re working in partnership on one of the greatest modern challenges our communities face: affordable housing

We're building greener workplaces, and getting greener every day.

Our head office in Bendigo, Victoria, was the first 5-star Green Star Building in regional Australia. It:

  • uses half the energy usage of a typical office building of its size
  • made a 50% reduction in the use of potable water
  • has a water treatment plant that recycles 20,000 litres of wastewater per day
  • makes use of recycled water to service all toilets throughout the building, saving almost 4.5 million litres of drinking water each year
  • is one of the first large-scale applications of under-floor displacement air conditioning in Australia. Using considerably less energy, this system provides fresh, clean air at low pressure with individually controlled vents at work stations
  • uses solar panels to heat water
  • has automated lights that dim or turn off with natural light levels

Outside of Bendigo, we're establishing a 6-star building standard, making sure our current spaces are upgraded where we can and that any new locations meet our high environmental standards. A 6-star rating is reserved for highly efficient buildings, and are certified by the Green Building Council of Australia. We're making sure our offices are harnessing solar and renewable energy (and no gas), and have EV charging stations to support our green initiatives.

We're also preventing waste by working with partners like St Vincents Men's Shelter in Adelaide, Lifeline Loddon Mallee, Foodshare and more, to by donating surplus furniture and other equipment, with 5.3t surplus items diverted from landfill so far.

Feeding into community prosperity

Our expertise in financial services allows us to leverage capital to help customers and their communities to thrive

We’re always evolving how we create positive social impacts for our people and their communities. As Australia’s most trusted bank [2], we recognise that we have a duty to act on the wide range of contemporary social challenges impacting and shaping our communities. We aim to respond to these with practical solutions and partnerships that make a genuine difference in people’s lives.

Here are some of the numerous initiatives we’re currently involved in:

[1] Our Bank does not and will not provide finance directly to projects or large-scale electricity generation in the following sectors: coal; coal seam gas; crude oil; natural gas; native forest logging. For example, we do not provide finance directly to grid connected fossil fuel electricity generation however, we may provide equipment finance to support a customer’s backup diesel generator.
