“It begins at Bendigo Bank”

We’ve never been ‘just a bank’. Just like you should never be ‘just an employee’. We’re united in our belief that in banking, better can be bigger, and together we’re making it happen.

It starts here. With Bendigo Bank… and you.

About the opportunity

As the Head of AI Engineering, you will be responsible for leading the design, development, and operationalisation of Artificial Intelligence capabilities across the bank. This strategic role sets the vision and delivery roadmap for AI, driving innovation and value creation through machine learning, natural language processing, and generative AI.

Leading a team of technical experts, you will embed advanced intelligence into digital experiences, decisioning, and operational processes across the bank, ensuring all AI solutions are ethically sound, explainable, secure, and aligned with both customer needs and regulatory expectations.

In this role you’ll get to…

  • Define and deliver the enterprise-wide AI strategy, roadmap, and target state architecture.
  • Identify, prioritise, and scale high-impact AI use cases in alignment with business strategy.
  • Oversee the development, testing, deployment, and lifecycle management of AI models and services.
  • Build and lead a high-performing team of applied scientists, ML engineers, and AI specialists.
  • Champion AI literacy and capability uplift across the broader organisation.
  • Embed ethical AI, fairness, transparency, and model explainability into all solutions.

What you’ll bring to the role

To be successful in the role you will have: …

  • Extensive experience in data science, AI, or advanced analytics, with a proven track record in a leadership role.
  • Deep technical expertise in machine learning, deep learning, NLP, and generative AI.
  • Proven experience developing and deploying AI models into production environments at scale.
  • Strong understanding of MLOps, AI lifecycle management, and responsible AI frameworks.
  • Experience with ML engineering tools (e.g., MLflow, Vertex AI, Azure ML, Databricks).
  • A tertiary qualification in a technical field (PhD or Master's preferred) and excellent stakeholder skills.

So, why work with us?

  • Want big impact that matters? Here, you’ll know your work directly benefits the customers and communities we all serve.
  • Want to be more than just a number? Join a team that truly values you – and that gets more and more diverse every day.

  • Health and well-being support, including discounted gym memberships, private health insurance options, and our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for you and your immediate family members.
  • Take your learning to the next level through opportunities like our corporate university ‘BEN U’ or at an external provider of your choice.
